How to get and install free software needed
  • To download a free copy of Mozilla, go to Mozilla
  • To download a free copy of Internet Explorer, go to Microsoft.
  • To download a free copy of Flash, go to Macromedia Flash.
  • To download anti-virus software:

Virus infection of files is a serious problem for Internet users. You will be submitting files to the course instructor on a regular basis. It is critical that the files be clean before you submit them. If you do not have a current antivirus program on your computer, GET ONE!! Be sure to update the protection every 30 days.

As a Virginia Tech student, you are eligible for the latest version of Norton AntiVirus software. To download Norton AntiVirus, go to antivirus.vt.edu. You will have to use your Tech PID and password to get the software. Please be aware that this is a HUGE program and will take a LONG time to download. Start downloading to a location on your hard drive where you will be able to find it, and go do something else after you are sure the process is going right. When the download is complete, you will have to install the software by double clicking on it. You will then have to re-connect to the Internet for the latest virus updates from the company that manufactures the software. This is an excellent antivirus program and you will never beat the price (free).
How to purchase software at University sites

The University Bookstore has Microsoft and many other brands of software at MUCH LOWER prices that you can get at most places. You can get prices and even order online from the bookstore.

The university also makes certain software available for students at even lower prices, but you must actually pick it up on campus at the Bridge between the Library and Torgerson Hall. These programs come on CD-ROM only and do not include manuals. See the web site of that service if you want to check prices and availability.

You will need a Tech ID card or evidence that you are a Tech student to purchase software at student prices.
